"There is a high correlation between vision loss and hearing loss in many patients."

The Hearing Institute is a full-integrated part of the clinical services offered through Cataract & Laser Institute in Kokomo. This facility expands our services with the same professionalism, integrity, quality, thoroughness and attention to detail that Cataract & Laser Institute provides.

There is a high correlation between vision loss and hearing loss in many patients. Two sensory deficits occurring at the same time causes twice the loss to quality of life. Hearing loss is the most common and most frequently undiagnosed and untreated medical condition in our patient population. People with hearing loss often put off a decision to get hearing help because they are either in denial or unaware of the fact that receiving early treatment for hearing loss has the potential to literally transform lives, which is what The Hearing Institute aims to do.

At The Hearing Institute, we offer free comprehensive diagnostic testing services to determine the cause and appropriate management of reduced hearing. Our trained professional clinical staff can help explain which of our large selection of digital programmable hearing aids is right for both your lifestyle and your wallet. Whether you already wear hearing aids or have never tried one, we offer live demonstrations while you are visiting us.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much do hearing aids cost?

Our hearing aids are competitively priced and available in all price ranges. We avoid promotional pricing, discontinued devices and misleading advertisements that can make the process of selecting a hearing aid confusing. The Hearing Institute also provides patient financing for hearing aids including no-interest and extended payment plans.

Are hearing aids covered by Medicare?

The Hearing Institute does not charge for comprehensive hearing evaluations. Medicare and most other insurance plans will not cover the cost of your hearing aid; however, some private plans do offer benefits.

Can I deduct my hearing aids from my taxes?

Hearing aids may be submitted as a medical expense to an employer sponsored medical savings account or cafeteria plan. Ask the employee benefits specialist at your employer for more information on this benefit. Also, individuals whose medical expenses exceed 7.5% of their adjusted gross income may deduct hearing aid costs on their income tax return.

Aren't most hearing aids uncomfortable?

At The Hearing Institute, 85% of first-time users choose virtually invisible and exceptionally comfortable aids which are ready to wear and can be fit on the same day as the hearing evaluation. Most previous hearing aid wearers are delighted when they try our new smaller, lighter and clearer hearing aids. Today's technology has made hearing aids a completely different experience than only a few short years ago. You can hardly see them, and you will hardly know you have them on. We are proud to offer some of the newest technology available.

Will I need two hearing aids?

Because you have two ears, you naturally hear in stereo. Most patients will be prescribed two hearing aids because most hearing loss occurs symmetrically in both ears.

Will a hearing aid make all sounds louder, including background noise?

Today's hearing aids use directional microphones and advanced programming to detect human speech and distinguish it from all other unwanted noise.

How common is hearing loss?

Hearing loss is one of the most common health care problems facing older adults today. Over 30 million senior Americans (over age 60) and perhaps an equal number of Baby Boomers suffer from hearing loss. Of those people, over 80% are undiagnosed and untreated.

Will my family doctor tell me if I have a hearing problem?

Unfortunately, statistics suggest fewer than fifteen percent of family doctors address hearing loss and very few of them have testing facilities or treatment options available to their offices. Because most hearing loss tends to be gradual over time, the symptoms go unnoticed during a typical doctor visit. To be sure, you should schedule a comprehensive hearing evaluation with our hearing specialist at The Hearing Institute.

What should you expect from your hearing aids?

The treatment of choice for 90% of all hearing problems is hearing aids. The result, in most cases, is a significant, noticeable improvement in hearing clarity and understanding ability even in noisy places. New "open fit" technology produces a more "natural" sound quality - no more plugged-up, echo or down in a barrel sound. Hear clearly on the telephone without whistling or feedback. They are completely programmable to your hearing loss, even if it changes in the future. New modern designs are virtually invisible and so comfortable you may even forget that you are wearing one.

How do I know which hearing aids are right for me?

The experienced hearing instrument specialists at The Hearing Institute will select and apply the best hearing aid style and fit based on your lifestyle needs and hearing loss.

Can I try hearing aids to see if they are right for me?

Absolutely! At The Hearing Institute, we have a 30-day trial period. If you are dissatisfied with your hearing aid, you can return it for a refund or exchange it for a different style within the 30-day period, less a processing fee.

Aren't all hearing aids alike?

No. The Hearing Institute offers a full line of hearing aids with many different features and benefits depending on your needs. Only an experienced professional is attuned to these differences and can best prescribe a suitable solution for you.
